The edible inner seed of the ginkgo tree (ginnan / 銀杏 / 白果), a small jade-green kernel roasted or simmered in East-Asian dishes such as chawanmushi and hot pots; it carries starch, potassium, and niacin. Distinct from ginkgo leaf extract, which is sold as a supplement.

Ginkgo nuts are traditionally eaten only in small, cooked amounts. They contain a naturally occurring compound (ginkgotoxin), so large servings — especially of raw nuts, and especially for young children — are not advised. Eat them cooked and in moderation.
