Review your health log: timelines, saved views and missing data
What you can do
Start in Timeline to check the original entries, then create a saved view for the metrics, records or feelings you want to revisit. Align their date ranges. A blank day is missing information, not a value of zero, and a visible difference does not establish its cause.
Before you start
You need records in the period you select. A view can be saved before there is enough data to compare anything; its empty state is useful information. Choose one question, such as “What did I record about sleep this week?”, rather than expecting a diagnosis.
Step by step
- 1
Open Timeline and locate the dates you want to review. Check the original names, amounts, times and source labels. Correct an obvious entry mistake before interpreting a chart.
- 2
Open Views and choose Create a view. Give it a practical name, such as “Sleep notes”, so you can find it again.
- 3
Choose a card type: Metric for numeric readings, Records for logged items, or Feelings for subjective ratings. Select the relevant metric, item or feeling, then a 7-, 14-, 30- or 90-day range.
- 4
Add the card. If you want another beside it, choose its settings and add it too; use matching ranges for a period comparison. Save the view. You can include up to six cards.
- 5
Read the source, unit and available dates before comparing values. Metric charts show daily means for each source and unit; individual readings appear below. Follow a date link back to Timeline when you need the original context.
A worked example
| Example | How to record or read it |
|---|---|
| A day with no sleep reading | You do not know the value. Do not read it as zero hours or a poor night. |
| Two readings on one day | The chart may show their daily mean within the same source and unit. Read the individual values below before drawing a conclusion. |
| Better feelings on walking days | This is a pattern in the recorded days. Workload, sleep, missing entries and other changes may also differ. |
Check the result
Reopen the saved view and confirm that its name, cards and ranges remain. Inspect at least one original date in Timeline. If a series looks surprising, check units, sources and missing days first. Deleting a saved view removes that view’s configuration; it does not delete the underlying records.
Questions and troubleshooting
Is 14 days enough to know what works?
Fourteen days is an available display range, not a guarantee of a reliable health conclusion. The number of recorded days, other changes and the outcome you care about all matter. A personal log alone does not prove effectiveness.
Why is my view empty?
Check the selected range and card. A sleep feeling is not the same data as sleep duration. Imported proposals do not become records until you confirm them, and a device may not have synced.
What this does and does not tell you
Use your log to describe what you observed and prepare questions. Do not use it alone to diagnose a condition or change treatment. MHLW eJIM recommends checking the source and context of health information and comparing more than one source; personal experience is not the same as research evidence.
