How to track habits: plans, completed days and rest days
What you can do
A habit plan says when you intend to do something; a check-in says what happened that day. Done, Not done, Skipped and no check-in have different meanings. A saved entry set is different again: it reuses items you choose to record together.
Before you start
Open Today and choose a familiar activity, such as a walk you already do. Set a target only if you want one. The example target below explains the controls and is not an exercise recommendation. For a one-off activity, a normal Habit entry is enough.
Step by step
- 1
In Habit plans, choose Add a habit plan. Search for a habit or type your own. Check that you selected the intended activity before continuing.
- 2
Select the weekdays. Optionally enter a target and unit, or a pause period. Save the plan. Saving a plan does not itself mean you have completed the activity.
- 3
On the selected day, choose Done only after doing the activity. This also creates its linked activity record. If you did not do it, use Didn’t do it; if you chose a rest day, use Skip today. Leave it unanswered when you have not recorded what happened.
- 4
If you chose the wrong state, use Undo, then select the correct one. Undo returns the plan to no check-in and removes the activity record created by that check-in. A separately entered activity remains, so check the day’s records too.
- 5
Use Manage to edit the schedule or remove a plan. Removing a plan keeps existing activity records in Timeline. For several recurring items, save an entry set from recorded items and reuse it only after those events actually happen.
Reuse a saved meal or routine
After saving at least one entry in Today, open Save a set under Your saved meals & routines. Name the set, select the recorded items to include, and save. On a later occasion, choose the set to add its items to the selected day. Check the resulting amounts and entries. Exact times from the original records are not reused. A set does not run automatically on scheduled days.
A worked example
| Example | How to record or read it |
|---|---|
| Done | You recorded completion; check the linked record and its amount. |
| Not done | You explicitly recorded that it did not happen. |
| Skipped / rest | You chose a rest day, rather than reporting completion. |
| No check-in | No outcome was entered. This is not the same as Not done. |
| Not scheduled today | The plan is not due today; do not infer a missed activity. |
Check the result
For a fictional Monday walk with a 20-minute target, mark Done and check the resulting activity. Try Undo and confirm that the plan becomes unanswered again. If the recorded quantity differs from what you actually did, correct the activity record; changing a plan is not a correction of past events.
Questions and troubleshooting
Will a plan send a reminder?
Habit plans organise check-ins in Today. This guide does not describe a notification or automatic reminder feature. Open Today to record the outcome.
I already logged the activity manually. Should I mark Done too?
Done creates a linked record, so doing both may leave two events. Check the existing records and keep the entries that represent what really happened. Use the plan check-in as your normal route when following a plan.
What this does and does not tell you
A schedule measures your record of activity, not its medical effectiveness. Rest and missing data should stay distinct. Saved sets and repeated entries are conveniences for recording; they do not verify that an activity happened or that an amount was appropriate.
