Black cohosh
A supplement made from the root and rhizome of black cohosh (Actaea racemosa / Cimicifuga racemosa), a North-American plant, taken as capsules, tablets, or an extract. Traditionally taken by some women around menopause.
Worth knowing
Black cohosh has been linked in published case reports to liver injury, ranging from mild to severe; the EU has required a liver-injury warning on these products since 2012. Stop use and seek medical care if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or upper-right abdominal pain, and talk with a clinician before use.
